Diving Deeper Into the Ford Evos Concept Vehicle

By Germain Ford | Posted in Ford Evos on Wednesday, September 14th, 2011 at 12:55 PM

Remember the Ford Evos Concept vehicle we introduced to you last week (Ford Evos Concept: What Future Ford Vehicles Might Look Like)? Well, we want to show you that beauty is more than skin deep on this concept vehicle by giving you a deep-dive into the technology built into this concept.

The technology in the Ford Evos Concept reflects a new generation of driver interaction and awareness under development in the Ford Research and Innovation laboratories. Seamless connectivity between the vehicle and the driver’s “personal cloud” of information is at the heart of its capabilities.

The following videos demonstrate how Ford researchers are focusing efforts on delivering four key customer benefits: personalization, enhancement of the driving experience, looking after the driver’s well-being and smart electrified powertrain optimization.

These first two videos provide a look at what the cloud is and how the Ford Evos Concept uses that information to personalized your driving experience to match your lifestyle.

Are you spending more time in your car? If so, this videos shows ways that the Ford Evos Concept may be able to look after your health and wellness as you drive, responding to you without you asking it do anything.

Finally, the Ford Evos Concept can learn about your driving style and preferences, as well as using the cloud to gather data specific to you and your environment. The result is adaptive driving to provide an enhanced driver experience, custom-made for you.

The Ford Evos Concept is one of the Ford vehicle that will be on display starting next week at the 64th International Motor Show, held September 15-25, 2011 in Frankfurt. Come back to theFordStory.com for the latest updates from the show.

Ford Uses Zipcar To Get College Kids To Test-Drive Its Cars

Ford Uses Zipcar To Get College Kids To Test-Drive Its Cars

If you’re an automaker, how do you get the next generation of car buyers to pay attention to your new models?
One way has traditionally been by putting your cars into rental fleets. But some companies only rent to drivers 25 and up, so what to do about college students?

For Ford, there’s now a one-word answer: Zipcar.

Zipcar on campus

The popular and growing car-sharing service [NSDQ:ZIP] has made a concerted effort to place its cars on or near college campuses, offering students the options of cars when they need them without the burden and cost of parking, insurance, and maintenance when they don’t.

University administrators like the college car-sharing schemes too, since shared cars reduce the space required for parking student vehicles. On space-constrained campuses (meaning most of them), that’s real estate that could more productively be used for classroom buildings, research labs, or dormitories.

Ford will be the largest single provider of vehicles to Zipcar’s more than 250 college locations, the two companies announced on August 31st. The agreement will run for two years, and Ford vehicles arriving on campuses now will be available to student members starting September 1st.

Taxi! Ford Transit Connect Taxis are Headed to NYC

Taxi! Ford Transit Connect Taxis are Headed to NYC

Picture yourself saying, “Let me tell you about the fantastic taxi experience I had today!” Thanks to Ford, you might just say that the next time you hail a taxi in New York City, and we think that the taxi drivers themselves may also offer up some praise. The first Ford Transit Connect Taxis are now in service there and are part of an initial order for the vehicle following the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission’s approval for their use in the city.

Now, how can we be certain the Transit Connect Taxis will make life grand for taxi drivers, too? Because they helped to develop the vehicle! Ford visited cities across the U.S. to speak with drivers, owners and city officials about what they wanted, and the feedback on the final product has ranged from comfortable and roomy to durable and “great.”

Headroom, visibility and easier passenger entry and exit through the sliding doors are among the vehicle’s assets. A 39-foot turning diameter takes the pressure off drivers, making it easier to handle tight spots, and the 2.0-liter inline-four engine gets an estimated 22 mpg city and 27 mpg highway, an improvement of about 30 percent compared to traditional taxis. The Transit Connect Taxi is also available with an engine prep package for converting to compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied propane gas (LPG).

More than 400 of the Transit Connects are headed to NYC (total orders across the United States are approaching 1,000 in its first year on the market). Cities where taxicab company operators have ordered Transit Connect Taxis in addition to New York include Los Angeles, Las Vegas, St. Louis, Tampa, Fla., Orlando, Fla., Hartford, Conn. and West Haven, Conn.

Transit Connect Taxi also has been approved by governing agencies in Chicago, Philadelphia and Boston, cities that require taxis to meet certain requirements. Additionally, it has been approved for use at Reagan National Airport and Dulles International Airport by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority and at San Francisco International Airport by the SFO Airport Commission.

Ford Evos Concept: What Future Ford Vehicles Might Look Like

By Germain Ford | Posted in Ford Evos on Thursday, September 8th, 2011 at 1:54 PM

You’ve heard us use the term “global design” before at Ford; it basically refers to the foundation of new Ford products that can be used worldwide. To simplify that even further, it’s like automotive DNA. And, it’s also part of the One Ford product plan.

The Ford Evos Concept, which will officially debut at the 64th Frankfurt International Motor Show, held September 15-25, 2011, might give you the biggest hint of all regarding the DNA of the next generation of Ford cars and crossovers.

“The Ford Evos Concept is a strong statement of intent from the global design team, and highlights the compelling vision we have for our future products. We believe that the new generation of buyers around the world has higher expectations for a more premium design language in all products,” explained J Mays, Group Vice President, Design and Chief Creative Officer.

Ford EcoBoost Engine Expands to 2012 Edge and Explorer

By Germain Ford | Posted in Ford EcoBoost, Ford Edge, Ford Explorer on Thursday, September 1st, 2011 at 1:05 PM

Ford EcoBoost Engine Expands to 2012 Edge and Explorer

It’s here! The 2.0-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine is available in the 2012 Ford Edge and Explorer, shipping to dealerships as we speak! It can be had in the front-wheel-drive models.

And by the way, you thought the Edge and Explorer boasted great fuel economy before? Equipped with the 2.0-liter EcoBoost, the Edge with EcoBoost has a hearty EPA-estimated 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. Meanwhile, the Explorer has an EPA-estimated 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway, which is a 30 percent highway fuel-efficiency increase over the most economical previous-gen 2010 Explorer. Both applications will deliver 240 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque.

The Edge and Explorer are the first vehicles in North America to be offered with the new 2.0-liter engine. The EcoBoost marks the next chapter in the Ford strategy to downsize engines and use turbocharging and direct injection to deliver the power and fuel economy you crave.

The EcoBoost does this by combining a smaller displacement with a turbocharger and gasoline direct injection to provide the power of a normally aspirated V6 with the fuel economy of a four-cylinder engine. Moving forward, EcoBoost engines will continue to deliver more power and fuel economy from smaller-displacement engines; Ford has committed to offering fuel-efficient, high-technology EcoBoost engines in 90 percent of its global vehicle portfolio by 2013.

Edsel Bryant Ford’s 1934 Model 40 Special Speedster Debuts at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

Edsel Bryant Ford’s 1934 Model 40 Special Speedster Debuts at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

Discoveries during restoration confirm originality of design and engineering.

It has grace, style and a 77-year history shrouded in mystery that has intrigued automotive collectors, enthusiasts and writers worldwide. Edsel Ford’s restored 1934 Model 40 Special Speedster was unveiled on August 17th by Lincoln and the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House at The Lodge, Pebble Beach in Monterey County, Calif. It appearred again on Sunday August 21st, at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Restored to its timeless elegance, Edsel’s personal roadster shared its story of a decades-long journey.

The Speedster’s extensive restoration by award-winning RM Auto Restoration in Ontario, Canada, revealed the stunning, custom made “one off” as it originally looked in 1940 after its final redesign by Edsel and designer E. T. Gregorie. The revelations uncovered during a year-long restoration have resolved many long-held assumptions about the illustrious vehicle’s journey over time. But more than a story of restoration, the vehicle provides a glimpse into the early years of Edsel Ford’s design and automotive styling as President of Ford Motor Company and its luxury Lincoln line.

The Speedster celebrates Edsel’s eye for design that began when as a small boy he would take pen to paper to sketch cars as well as everyday objects.

“My grandfather was an early believer that everyday objects – including automobiles – could be seen as works of art,” said Edsel Ford II, who unveiled the Speedster. “While he wasn’t a designer in the traditional sense, his eye for styling and influence was apparent as he initiated and built the design department at Ford Motor Company.”

After Edsel’s death in 1943, the Speedster crisscrossed the U.S. making limited appearances, then it disappeared – some feared it had been destroyed. It was last seen when it was photographed in Hollywood in the 1950s after which it was purchased by a U.S. Navy sailor in Florida for $603 in 1958. It didn’t appear again until Bill Warner displayed it at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in 1999.

In 2008 it was sold to a Texas car collector for $1.76 million, then, following the collector’s untimely death in 2010, the Speedster returned to Edsel’s home, now operated as an historic site called the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House. Over the years, alterations were made to its grille, engine, paint and interior – it is these alterations that have been reversed by RM Auto Restoration to take the famous car back to the 1940 design and engine.

Customers Improve Ford Focus Electric’s In-Dash Displays With Virtual Simulator

Customers Improve Ford Electric Dash Displays With Virtual Simulator

For the next generation of Ford’s in-dash displays, the company is actually putting some thought into them—and focus groups are using a high-tech virtual simulator to determine what works in relaying information to drivers and passengers alike.

The driving simulator is carefully designed to match the interior of a Ford Focus Electric, with two 4.2-inch color LCD screens on both sides of the speedometer. Once the occupant gets in (and 30 drivers have already), the simulator takes him on a diverse 11-mile drive—across winding hills, city streets, country roads, stretches of flat nothingness, and Grandma’s house.

“These screens are an integral part of Focus Electric and we thought the best way to make sure they would do their job is to have people come in and try them out for themselves,” said Paul Aldighieri, an engineer with Ford. “The only true way to get a feel for what the screens are telling the driver is by actually getting behind the wheel.”
